Under the direction of Lynne Conaway, a teacher at Radiant Rognel Heights Middle School, a Red Cross Club was born. In November 2000, twenty-five 7th and 8th graders came together for their first Red Cross Club meeting. They joined for a whole host of reasons-to help those less fortunate, to earn service-learning credits, and to have fun.

Students squirmed in their seats with excitement as they learned about the mission of the Red Cross and brainstormed service activities they could do for the remainder of the school year. They decided to collect aluminum cans at their school and recycle them for money, defraying the cost of creating an International School Chest for the Red Cross.

The International School Chest Program encourages schools and other community groups to create a chest filled with specified school supplies to be sent to a country affected by disaster. The country chosen this year is Kenya, a country facing horrible economic consequences from an ongoing drought. Rognel Heights students will collect and buy pencils, jump ropes, paper, rulers, and other school supplies to fill the chest.

The Red Cross Club also has plans to create home safety kits, collect toys for needy children in the area, and plan a neighborhood service project. Youth Services Specialist, Carolyn Fuss said, "I am so inspired by the students at Rognel Heights. They are full of energy and ideas."
