(Baltimore) — Companies large and small, representing industries throughout our region, have taken action to support their neighbors in Haiti by donating more than $1.2 million to the American Red Cross International Response Fund and Haiti earthquake. They are encouraging their customers and employees to follow suit.
Thanks to the help of these caring companies, relief materials are being delivered to Haiti. Red Cross workers from around the world, as well as volunteers based in Haiti, are addressing urgent needs and mobilizing a massive response operation in the region. The Red Cross is providing a wide range of help and support in the form of food, water, relief supplies, field hospitals, emotional support, sanitation facilities and family linking services for the people of Haiti.
In addtion to corporate giving, small businesses, area churches, schools and civic organizations have also taken up collections in support of Red Cross Haiti emergency relief and recovery efforts. Many of these businesses also support local Red Cross efforts. In January the Red Cross of Central Maryland responded to 53 disasters in our region and provided food, shelter and other relief to 75 local families. Disasters in Central Maryland are usually home fires but the Red Cross also supports residents after tornadoes, hurricanes and floods like the one that devastated neighborhoods in Dundalk last fall.
The American Red Cross of Central Maryland shelters, feeds and counsels victims of disasters; provides lifesaving blood to area hospitals; teaches lifesaving skills; and supports military members and their families.
