Job Title: Advanced Manufacturing Machine Operator Apprentice
As an Advanced Manufacturing Machine Operator Apprentice , you’ll start with a short pre-apprenticeship training program that equips you with the essential skills employers are looking for. During this time, you’ll have the chance to interview with multiple partner companies for potential full-time employment opportunities.
Once you complete the pre-apprenticeship and receive a job offer, you’ll begin full-time employment with a VMA partner company while advancing through a 12-month Registered Apprenticeship. This unique program blends paid, hands-on work experience with flexible, self-paced technical training .
The result? You’ll earn industry-recognized credentials, real-world experience, and full-time wages—all at no cost to you.
At the end of the apprenticeship, successful apprentices receive their Virginia Journeyworker Certification , become eligible for wage progression , and continue with full-time employment at their apprenticeship company.
Key Responsibilities
Operate and monitor production machinery and equipment
Perform basic machine setups and changeovers as required
Inspect parts and products during production for quality and consistency
Follow safety protocols and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
Read and follow work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and production schedules
Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors to ensure smooth workflow
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
Complete assigned self-paced training modules and meet program milestones
Training Focus Areas
Manufacturing Essentials – Workplace communication, job readiness, punctuality, and career awareness
Math & Measurement – Fractions, decimals, algebra, unit conversions, and core measurement tools
Manufacturing Technology – Blueprint reading, mechanical/electrical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, PLCs, robotics
Quality & Business Acumen – Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, process improvement, quality control, and basic cost principles
Safety – OSHA guidelines, hazard communication, PPE use, lockout/tagout procedures, confined space safety
