Overview Seeking full-time Cancer Genetic Counselor in Winston-Salem, NC. The Comprehensive Cancer Center at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center is proud to be among an elite group of cancer centers acknowledged as the nation's leaders in the fight against cancer. The National Cancer Institute's comprehensive designation provides patients access to the latest technologies, cancer treatments, clinical trials, and research. The Cancer Genetics service comprises 4 full-time genetic counselors. Counselors see patients from their own clinic schedules and in multidisciplinary cancer clinics. Responsibilities include providing risk assessment, counseling, testing and support for patients and families with increased cancer risk; and serving as an informational resource for staff on hereditary cancer syndromes. Counselors participate in cancer center committees, attend and present at weekly tumor conferences, and are involved in research, teaching, and community outreach. There are opportunities to expand collaboration with pediatric oncology, hematology, telehealth genetic counseling services, and the precision medicine navigator. The program also provides clinical supervision for the University of North Carolina Greensboro and Wake Forest University genetic counseling training programs. Responsibilities Collaborates with multi-disciplinary clinical teams and healthcare providers in providing genetic and genomic health care. Collaborates with physicians and other health care providers to plan and implement research regarding medical genetics. Identifies patients who may benefit from specific genetic and genomic information and/or services based on assessment data. Explains the nature of genetics evaluation to patients; discusses options and delineates risks, benefits and limitations of tests and clinical assessments. Orders tests and performs clinical assessments in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations. Interprets genetic laboratory test results and other diagnostic studies with personal and family medical history to assess and communicate risk factors. Provides patients with credible, accurate, and current genetic information, resources, and services, tailored to individual needs including culture, language, literacy, and preferences. Promotes patient-specific decision making in an unbiased, non-coercive manner that respects culture and values. Evaluates impact and effectiveness of genetic and genomic technology on patient outcomes. Documents case information in the medical record and communicates with referring physicians and the care team as needed. Plans, organizes, and conducts public and professional education programs on medical genetics and genetic counseling issues. Performs self-assessments to identify knowledge gaps and addresses them to maintain quality of care. Maintains professional growth and staying current with standards of practice and developments in genetics/genomics. Qualifications Education/Experience: Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an ACGC-accredited program. New graduates are encouraged to apply.
