Job Description

Mary McDowell Friends School (MMFS) invites applications for a full-time School Psychologist beginning August 2025.

Position Overview

To support the mission of the school by supporting and enhancing the social-emotional well-being of the students through both direct and indirect programming. Primary responsibilities include individual counseling, consultation with teachers and administration, parent guidance, crisis intervention, and collaboration with outside treatment providers. 

Essential Responsibilities and Duties 

Outreach and Networking: 

  • Attend BAPCIS meetings (meetings of the Brooklyn independent school counselors, which are held at least four times a year).
  • Stay in contact with APCIS and the New York City meetings.
  • Receive and evaluate letters from local professionals looking to be placed on school referral lists as to the appropriateness of the professional.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Admissions provide tours and information to professionals who are interested in learning more about the schools for their own possible referrals of students.

Administration: 

  • Assist the Assistant Head of School and Director of Admissions with planning class placement.
  • Organize year-end standardized testing, including order, planning, arranging for distribution to teachers, collection, and scoring.
  • Hold regularly scheduled individual meetings with staff who provide direct counseling support services to the students in all three buildings.
  • Organize and hold periodic meetings of the counseling support program.
  • Be available for impromptu meetings with counseling support staff in response to an issue or crisis that might have developed.
  • Meet with some regularity with the Assistant Head of School and the Directors of the programs regarding the social-emotional needs of the students and their families.

Direct Intervention: 

  • Be available to parents who request a meeting.
  • Be available to intervene with students in a crisis or on days when other counseling support personnel are not available.
  • Be available to faculty and administrators to help support them in their work and concerns.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time exempt position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with a half-hour paid lunch; faculty meetings occur every Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand and will be scheduled in advance.

Travel

On occasion, travel between campuses is necessary for meetings, which are scheduled with advanced notice and are within walking distance from each other.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

This position requires the ability to maintain the physical capacity required to navigate the school environment and to ensure the safety of the students. The ability to open filing cabinets and bend or stand for long periods of time, as necessary. Classroom locations vary based on student schedules; this position occasionally ascends/descends stairs to teach from different rooms in the building.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $72,000 - $115,000. Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • MA required; special education experience a plus; PhD Preferred
  • 3-5 years of direct experience in counseling, psychology, or social work
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and G Suite applications
  • An understanding of learning disabilities and appropriate educational practice with students with learning disabilities
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees, management, and external agencies to maximize performance, problem-solving, and achieve results
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to a new environment
