VCS is looking for Telecom Technician II- Driving Required for one of our clients in La Grange, TX .
Work Location: LaGrange, TX 78945
Pay Rate: $35/hr
Shift:
- Monday-Friday (Will Likely have Over time - Location will be in La Grange but will travel in company Vehicle to Various Locations)
- 7AM-3:30PM
Contract : 1 year with possible extension
Minimum Qualifications:
- Two or more years of experience in IT and/or the telecommunications industry.
- A degree(s) in electronics technology, telecommunications technology, computer science or relevant field from an accredited institution may be substituted per company's guidelines for certain years of experience.
- Driver's License
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree(s) in electronics technology, telecommunications technology, computer science or relevant field
- Networking Certification in Cisco, Alcatel-Lucent, Juniper or equivalent such as CCNA or NRS1
- Experience in microwave, SONET, DWDM, MPLS, and digital trunked radio
General Overview
At an intermediate level, performs duties in the field to assist with planning, designing, installing, maintaining and operating company's telecommunication networks which consist of digital trunked radio, microwave, and fiber technologies. Technologies may consist of Sonet, DWDM, MPLS, LAN/WAN, VoIP, and wireless network technologies that support company's Transmission , Water , Wholesale Power, and Enterprise Services; including hydromet, generation and substation operations.
This position utilizes knowledge of best practices and experience in own discipline but is still building higher-level knowledge and skills.
- Receives a moderate level of guidance and direction from supervisor, manager and/or more experienced colleagues.
- Assists with installation and maintenance of field equipment with others.
- May perform final test, verify proper operation and release equipment for service.
- Interprets schematics, drawings and technical manuals necessary to install, repair and align equipment to specifications.
- Assists with implementing and maintaining vendor specific operating and management software.
- Assists with researching, analyzing and implementing software patches or hardware changes- Provides technical support to all telecom customers, technicians, analysts and engineers.
- Assists with analysis in the evaluation of new products and services.
- Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience.
- Assists with providing proactive diagnostic and analytic measures to ensure system reliability and overall system health.
- Assists with advising on cost effective telecom solutions that meet stringent security and reliability requirements.
- Follows Telecom Incident and Change Management processes.
- Drafts, updates and follows detailed work instructions relating to telecom network maintenance.
- Develops and updates preventative maintenance programs.
- Ensures schedules and maintenance intervals are met.
- Interfaces with vendors in accordance with approved Supply Management processes and procedures.
- Documents changes made to systems or equipment through appropriate communications and record keeping practices.
- Documents work into logs, files, system prints and other records and through communications, both verbal and written, with other team members and supervisors.
- May provide on-the-job training and guidance for colleagues with less experience.
- Maintains a clean work area; office, shop, field sites and vehicle.
- Technicians in the tower crew climb towers up to 600 feet to install and maintain equipment.
- May perform trunked radio and radio system maintenance and installation.
- Performs work by traveling independently or with a small crew to various locations as scheduled.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of networking principles that include LAN/WAN, wireless Ethernet TCP/IP and UDP
- Knowledge of routing and switching technology- Knowledge of routing protocols such as OSPF, VPLS, BGP and EIGRP
- Knowledge of electronics principles
- Knowledge of RF technologies and testing such as antenna sweeping, spectral analysis, power measurements and other testing methods
- Knowledge of digital microwave technology
- Knowledge of digital trunked radio technology
- Knowledge of fiber splicing and/or troubleshooting; OTDR, fiber characterization and other testing methods- Knowledge of TDM technology, BER testing, and other methods
- Knowledge of SONET technology from OC-3 to OC-192
- Knowledge of industry safety practices x Skill in analyzing and solving complex problems
- Skill in verbal and written communication x Skill in communicating effectively with team members, supervision/management and external organizations under normal and emergency conditions
- Intermediate skill level in office productivity applications (such as email, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.)
- Ability to work efficiently and independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to build relationships and foster teamwork
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Ability to balance and manage competing high priority work demands

- Work involves call-out
- Work involves weekends, holidays and non-standard hours

- Work in the tower crew is performed at heights of 600 feet or more

- Work requires use of protective equipment
- Work involves exposure to various and sometimes extreme weather conditions
- Work involves exposure to noise Physical Demands
- Work involves constant standing and/or walking in assisting with installation and repair of equipment
- Work involves frequent finger/hand manipulation in use of test equipment, hand tools and soldering iron
- Work involves climbing, crawling, crouching or other non-sitting positions in punching down phone cable, testing, installations, cable pulls and tower climbing less than 20% of the time
- Lifts and carries up to 50 pounds less than 20% of the time- Pushes or pulls up to 50 pounds less than 20% of the time
- Work involves finger/hand manipulation in using a keyboard and mouse less than 20% of the time
